What is Christmas?

What is Christmas?
Christmas, a great holiday, in remembrance of the birth of Jesus Christ - the savior of mankind, celebrated on December 25 [in some countries - in the Gregorian calendar (New Style, i.e. to where we live now), others - on the Julian calendar (old style, equivalent to 7 January of the new style)].

Its unique, miraculous birth began a new era in the history of God's relationship with man, and a new - an era of grace, the era in which everyone had a chance, be reconciled to God.
Were the first to celebrate AD Christian community in Rome? The oldest evidence for the existence of the Nativity is a note in the "Chromo" in 354 year. In this ancient, richly illustrated calendar, it is said that Christmas is celebrated on December 25. However, on this basis, it is impossible to judge whether there was that day in Rome before, and, if noted, since when.
Legalized the holiday was on Council of Ephesus in 431g.
In 10. with Christianity holiday AD began to spread in Russia, where it merged with the ancient Slavic winter holiday in honor of the spirits of ancestors (Vyatka), remnants of which are preserved in the "Christmastide" rites (masks, divination), the divination all Christian churches are considered dangerous
occult activities.

In nature, Christmas coincides with the winter solstice and it is very symbolic, because on that day the night decreases and increases day, which is a great analogy to Jesus Christ who is the light, gradually banishes night, the darkness of sin.

Fir- tree, equally beautiful in any season, also became one of the symbols of Christmas. Only once spruce decorated with fruit, mostly apples. In 1858, there was a very poor harvest of apples. Then Lorraine glassmakers designed glass balls to replace the apples. That's where there was a tradition of Christmas tree decorations.
In France, with a guided tour you can visit the glass workshops, which produced the first Christmas balls.

An integral tradition of celebrating Christmas - a "crib" (nativity scene), which depict the scene of the birth of Christ. Nursery, established in Prague in 1562, known as the world's first. For a long time crib installed only in churches, while the aristocratic family did not install them in their homes, and then the rich people also adopted this custom. In the 19th century the whole series started producing miniature figures of saints and angels.
To have them in the house became more and more popular, and today this figure can be found in many families, they acquire not necessarily in connection with religion, and sometimes just as a fashion statement, without hesitation.

Manger scene is: a baby in a cradle surrounded by parents, legendary ox and a donkey, shepherds, wise men, to the closest common people.
In this setting, the characters of the people play an important role, which depict an enthusiastic fisherman, fish saleswoman, a woman with a clay jug, a spinner with a spindle, a herald with a drum ...

Another feature of the Christmas festivities is the scene of the birth of the baby Jesus. Tradition of these scenes lies in the medieval mysteries, "live" scenes of Christ's birth. Birth scene played out in churches and church accompanied peniyami. Pastoral- This is a fun character scene in which the focus is on the common people.
Thus, the actors, playing characters of the people (in any case not from the Holy Family), tell humorous stories from the life of the villages, to be frank about their lives and act out the audience, which is no longer distinguish the truth from the Holy stories, and that - fiction.

In Russia, after the October Revolution, when faith in God was equated with treason, the Soviet authorities tried to cancel the celebrations, but the Christmas holiday so much was woven into the life of the Russian people that the Communists had to come up with an alternative. Our Christmas party and performances with Baba Yoga, Santa Claus, etc. is nothing more than a reworked Christmas scenes.
